Make Roasted Brussels Sprouts for Under $2

I was at a restaurant a few years ago and ordered something that came with a “seasonal vegetable” side dish. I pretty much like all vegetables so I didn’t think to ask what it was. When the server showed up with Brussels Sprouts, I immediately was disgusted. Up until that moment I associated Brussels Sprouts with stinky feet, because that is what they smelled and tasted like. As I dared to take a small bite I was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious. Since then Brussels Sprouts became ‘hands down’ one of my favorite vegetables. These little vitamin packed balls of deliciousness are awesome when properly prepared.

Brussels Sprouts usually go on sale off and on from late fall to early spring (since they are a cool weather crop). Alternatively, you can buy frozen Brussels Sprouts. They aren’t as fresh, but they are still tasty if you prepare them the same way you do fresh ones. Usually the cost for frozen Brussels Sprouts is significantly cheaper than fresh Brussels Sprouts, even when the fresh ones are on sale.

For the purpose of this post I chose to use fresh Brussels Sprouts.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts Ingredients

The Only ingredients you need are: Olive Oil (both Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and just regular Olive Oil works), Salt (I love Kosher Salt, but any Salt works), and Brussels Sprouts.

The first thing you want to do is to take a glass baking dish (any size works), coat the bottom with olive oil (Extra Virgin, or just regular Olive Oil works), then sprinkle with seas salt, or kosher salt.

Next you want to rinse the Brussels Sprouts, cut off the bottom and remove any dead leaves. Once this is done cut them in half. The reason why you want to cut them in half is that they roast more easily, and they soak up some of the salt and olive oil.Brussels Sprouts in half

Now put the Brussels Sprouts face down in the olive oil and salt mixture, and sprinkle with more olive oil and salt.

They are ready to bake! Put them into a preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes (stir halfway through).

You now have a delicious side dish that compliments any meal! The best thing about it, is that it is wallet friendly!

How I Made Roasted Brussels Sprouts for Under $2.00

With Brussels Sprouts prices depend on time of year and location. If fresh Brussels Sprouts are too expensive, or not available, you can buy frozen bags of Brussels Sprouts. I have seen generic store brand frozen Brussels Sprouts sell for anywhere from $.50 an lb to $1.50 an lb. You can prepare frozen Brussels Sprouts the same way, just let them thaw first. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!

Below is an ingredient guide explaining how I was able to get each ingredient for a low price. If you are on a mobile device the ingredient guide is an image, so feel free to save it as an image to your device. If you are on your computer, I made a printable version that you can save to your computer as a PDF or print to your printer.

  • These look really yummy. I love going out occasionally, but it’s amazing how much you can save making things at home!
